Canadian Singer - Songwriter Releases New CD

Why Canada's female singer - songwriters rock the world

Joni Mitchell, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Shari Ulrich, Jann Arden, Sarah McLachlan, Shania Twain, Chantal Kreviazuk, kd lang, Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavine, Sarah Harmer, Nellie Furtado, Leslie Feist. I love them all and respect their contributions. They paved the way for today's new muscical recording artists.

What is it that these artists share that many of their American contemporaries can't quite duplicate? Why does their music sound more authentic ... more real? i believe that when your music comes from your emotions rather than from some "formula for success", it comes through in the sound. You can hear the passion. Hopefully, you can hear that in my songs.

What's all the buzz?

Canadian singer-songwriter from Victoria BC.Some young musicians cause a lot of chatter when they release their first recording. I'm starting to experience that myself lately. It's exciting to have people appreciate your music, but it's a bit daunting. Maybe that's how we're raised in Canada -- to take it all in stride and enjoy the ride. I just needed to say that.

Coming out of nowhere?

It's strange. It seems as though one day no one has ever heard of you, and the next day you hear people in the mall singing your songs.

Does The World Really Need Another Vancouver Island Singer-Songwriter?

I don't pretend to be the world's next Nellie Furtado or Diana Krall. I'm just a girl from Victoria BC who loves to write and sing.

I try to use simple melodies and phrases to speak directly to issues that young people are facing every day, from relationship problems to the future of our planet. I hope the songs give you pleasure and make you think.

Practice makes ... permanent

It can often be challenging taking formal music lessons. I appreciate that my parents always encouraged me to stay with it.

Now I'm really glad I did. The music I play would probably be labeled "Indie Pop", but the classical training has given me a solid base of chording, meter and tempo that a lot of pop singers don't have. So thanks, Mom and Dad for hangin' in with me all that time (and paying for it).

"What kind of music ...?"

It's always hard to answer people who ask: "So what kind of music do you play?" or "What kind of songs do you sing?". I tell them "Just stuff you'd like. Want to hear a bit?"

Don't you just hate it when people want to stick a label on you? I guess it's easier for them to 'peg you'. I hope my songs make you feel better about your life. If they do, it doesn't matter what label you put on them.
